Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

title: illuminae (the illuminae files #1)
authors: amie kaufman and jay kristoff
rating: 5/5 stars
synopsis [from goodreads]:

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

“Am I not merciful?”

i went into this book not really knowing much about it and with pretty low expectations since sci-fi and spaceships aren’t really my kind of thing. i do recommend you to have at least some prior knowledge before going into it so as to make things easier to understand.

the first 100 pages or so were pretty slow and confusing for me and it did take a while for me to get into this world and fully understand what was going on. another worry i had was that i would not be able to connect to the characters and that the plot would be a little underdeveloped. but the writers did a great job with that, and it made me cry a lot, especially towards at the end. i felt that although some things weren’t explained very clearly, it was a lot better than i expected given the format the book was told in.

this book is the first book in a trilogy(?) and i’m excited to see what the next book has in stall for us!! that’s the end of the non-spoiler section, and if you haven’t read the book, just a warning, there will be spoilers ahead from this point onwards.

first of all, i would like to say that AIDAN creeped the hell out of me. just the thought of computers/robots able to have total control of things just scare me. i did like all the main characters though, which is kind of rare for me.

i did think that everyone would just end up dying [kady, ezra, AIDAN], and the next book would follow a different character. i did not expect AIDAN to act as ezra though. i didn’t really notice anything weird expect after kady killed dorian and ezra was not really concerned about that fact, but rather she went back to retrieve the rifle.

it also seems as though AIDAN is starting to develop feelings for kady? the way it talks about her does sounds like its starting to be like a human, sort of.

kady was an awesome and kick-ass main character and i can’t wait for the next book when she actually meets ezra’s mom, who i was totally not expecting to be the head of the BeiTech group. i just assumed she was probably some lunatic who went to jail.

somehow, i have a feeling that kady’s dad is not yet dead and might still be alive out there somewhere. so what do you think will happen in the next book? share some of your thoughts on this book with me if you have read it ❤
